Take a look at this:
The novel “The Reunion” by Guillaume Musso.
A literal translation of the original French title (La Jeune Fille et la Nuit) would be: “The Young Woman and the Night.”
Yikes.
That’s not what was chosen. And thank God—because “The Young Woman and the Night” sounds a bit clunky and vague to an American ear. It just doesn’t “click” for a high-stakes thriller.
That’s why the title was re-imagined and adapted for American culture: “The Reunion.”
It sounds punchy. It sounds intriguing. It sounds… American.
Now, imagine what a literal translation of YOUR title sounds like to a French reader. (Spoiler: It’s probably just as awkward.)
So, how do you get a perfect French translation for your books without dropping $5,000?

Let’s test a simple scene.
Imagine you wrote this beautiful, nostalgic passage in English:
The boy began pretending to be a little gardener in his grandparents’ vegetable patch. There was the warm brioche for his afternoon treat, spread thick with butter and homemade preserves, and a steaming mug of hot cocoa. And then there were the cows and donkeys in the pasture, and the hens whose eggs he’d go out to gather every morning.
Now, look at what happens when you use a Standard Automatic Translator (like Google or DeepL):

Yikes. Here is why that French version is a « DNF » (Did Not Finish) for a reader:
- « Prétendre » is a false friend. In French, it means « to claim, » not « to pretend. » Your character suddenly sounds like he’s in a legal battle, not playing a game.
- « Patch de légumes » doesn’t exist. It sounds like a software update for a tomato.
- « Traitement de l’après-midi » sounds like he’s taking medication, not having a snack.

Why this works:
- Potager (NOT patch de légumes): In French, a « patch » is either a software update or something you wear on your skin to quit smoking. Potager is the quintessential French word for a vegetable garden. It evokes tradition, soil, and the smells of the countryside.
- Jouer au petit jardinier (NOT prétendre être): This is the classic « false friend » trap. In French, prétendre means « to claim » or « to profess. » Without the right translation, your little character suddenly sounds like he’s in a legal battle, not a childhood game.
- Le Goûter (NOT traitement de l’après-midi): This one is a disaster. Traitement sounds like your character is receiving medical care or a chemical process. In France, the 4 PM snack is a sacred cultural ritual called Le Goûter. Using this word instantly connects with the reader’s heart.
- Confiture maison (NOT préserves maison): While « preserves » sounds high-end in English, préserves in French is rarely used for food (and can even sound like « preservatives »). Confiture is the only word that makes a Frenchman’s mouth water.
- Pré (NOT pâturage): Pâturage is a technical, agricultural term. It’s clinical. Pré is poetic, soft, and exactly what a novelist would use to describe a beautiful meadow.
The Result?
When a French reader opens your book, they don’t see a « translation. » They see an immersive story that feels like it was born in the heart of the French countryside.

Frequently (and Honestly) Asked Questions
“Why can’t I just use ChatGPT or DeepL?”
You can. It’s free. But be prepared for your readers to bail after page three—and even worse, leave you a devastating 1-star review. AI is great for translating a microwave manual or a quick email. But it’s a disaster when it comes to a character’s soul, dry humor, or cultural nuance. AI translates words. Boost Book translates intent. If you want a story that « breathes » naturally, you need a human author, not an algorithm.
“Will it really resonate with French culture?”
That’s the entire point of my service. I don’t do literal translations; I transpose your story into the culture. I adjust the dial for the French market (vocabulary, syntax, rhythm, dialogue, and typography). If your hero says « That’s awesome, » I’ll choose between Génial, Stylé, or C’est top depending on the character’s personality. If your hero is 5’11 » and weighs 176 lbs, your French reader will see 1m80 and 80kg. They won’t read « 2:30 PM »—they’ll read 14h30.
“How can a questionnaire replace talking to a human translator?”
I am a human. I just happen to hate Zoom calls. My questionnaire asks the high-impact questions: What is the genre of your novel?
